WE FIND the attitude and performance of Intermet Decatur Foundry plant manager Michael Delsignore refreshing, and we wish him luck as he works to boost the company's image with employees and the community.

Delsignore came to Decatur in November amid rumors that the plant was destined to close. Known as a "turnaround person," Delsignore faced a situation of declining sales, low morale among the workers and management strife. And while we don't claim to know all that's going on inside the Decatur foundry, there are positive signs that it's back on track.

That's good news for the community. Founded here in 1917, the former Wagner Castings Co. has played an important role in the local economy for many years, providing good jobs and decent benefits for generations of workers. But being as closely tied to the automotive industry as it is, the company also has ridden the peaks and valleys of the national economy.

Delsignore has cut 100 salaried and hourly workers at the plant to bring staffing levels in line with business. That undoubtedly has brought hard feelings among many workers, but he is out trying to drum up business himself and there is talk about possible growth for the plant with the introduction of new technology.

What we especially like are Delsignore's efforts to connect himself with the community by getting involved in civic activities and showing visitors some of Decatur's unique qualities. He's also gotten some support for a proposal to add Wagner back to the company's name and for purchasing advertising promoting the company.

"Fair but firm" is how Jerry Lewis, chairman of the bargaining committee for PACE Local 6-728 describes the plant manager. "I think we're on the upbeat now."

We think so, too, and we wish Delsignore and all the employees of Decatur Intermet Foundry our best in remaining an integral part of the city's future.
