Pre-Employment Physicals

Preventing workplace injuries starts before an employee’s first day on the job. Many employers incorporate pre-employment testing into their hiring process, and the results are significant. Organizations that utilize pre-employment testing experience an average of 47% fewer workers’ compensation injuries and three times higher retention than those that do not.

A pre-employment physical is designed to determine whether a candidate can safely perform the essential functions and physical demands of a specific role. At SafeWorks Illinois, these evaluations are not generic. Each exam is tailored to the actual requirements of the job, ensuring that hiring decisions are based on real-world expectations.

Our approach is grounded in job demand analysis. The same objective metrics used to define a position’s physical requirements are applied consistently during the post-offer employment physical. This ensures that every candidate is evaluated using the same standards, which is especially important for organizations operating across multiple locations.

Today’s hiring environment is shaped by increased regulation, corporate risk management goals, and a growing emphasis on employee satisfaction and retention. A safe and productive workplace is a key driver of long-term success, and that begins with placing the right individual in the right role. Evaluating a candidate’s physical readiness is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk and support a stronger workforce.

Our pre-employment physicals provide employers with confidence that candidates are capable of meeting the demands of the job. Through a comprehensive review of medical history, occupational background, and job-specific requirements, we are able to make informed recommendations that support both safety and performance.

Beyond the initial hiring decision, these evaluations also play an important role in long-term workforce management. They help ensure employees are placed in roles that align with their physical and functional abilities, reducing the likelihood of injury while supporting sustained productivity.

For positions with higher physical demands, SafeWorks Illinois can also coordinate Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET) through our physical therapy partners. These functional, job-specific evaluations assess strength, mobility, and endurance in relation to actual job tasks. When combined with the pre-employment physical, this provides a more complete picture of a candidate’s readiness for the role.

Pre-employment physicals can also be customized to meet the specific requirements of your organization. Additional services, including drug screening, audiology testing, laboratory work, and other employer-directed components, can be incorporated into a single visit to create a more efficient and comprehensive evaluation process.

Our goal is simple: to help you build a workforce that is capable, safe, and positioned for success from day one.

If you would like to discuss how to structure a pre-employment program for your organization, our team is available to help you design an approach that aligns with your workforce and operational needs.
